This year, the Dragon Boat Festival takes place on June 8 (Sunday). The Dragon Boat Festival Tour to Tai Po is a great way to experience Hong Kong's living culture and learn more about Chinese heritage.
The 2,000 year old Dragon Boat (Tuen Ng) Festival commemorates the death of Chinese national hero, Qu Yuan who drowned himself in the Mi Lo River as a personal protest against a corrupt government. Legend says that villagers raced their boats towards him in a vain attempt to save his life, slapping the water with their paddles, beating drums and throwing rice dumplings to the fish to stop them nibbling at his body.
The highlights of this exciting event are the colourful Dragon Boat Races. These unique boats have ornately carved and painted dragon heads and tails. Sitting two abreast, with a steerman at the back and a pace drummer in the bow, the paddlers race to the finish line, spurred on by powerful beat of the drums and roar of the crowds.
